$120,000 for council computers approved
The Ruapehu District Council's computer system is like a "10 tonne truck carrying a 20 tonne load", according to general manager Cliff Houston. He has asked and been granted permission to spend up to $120,000 on a new system. He said the present system was bought for the Taumarunui Borough Council and could not cope with the demands place on it by the new council administration. Users of the system experienced delays whenever they used the system, sometimes short delays but sometimes extremely long delays especially when someone else was running a powerful, complicated programme, he said. The delays were psychologically frustrating for staff who were under pressure to work quickly but were held up by the machine. He said there were possible replacement systems which could have capacity increases at later stages if needed.
