Guilty verdict for bungi operator follows death

A bungi jump operator from Ohakune has been found guilty of manslaughter after a man died in an Auckland jumping accident where the bungi cord was not attached to the jumping tower. In their decision the jury asked the judge for mercy in sentencing Jason John Collett, 22. The court heard that Collett had been smoking marijuana and had probably had more than the "one puff" the defendant had claimed; that there was no legislation governing bungi jumping operations and that Collett was an experienced jumpmaster. The crown prosecutor said Collett had allowed standards to deteriorate "certainly on that day and on that tower."
