Whakapapa skier on Wi Rutene's heels
Whakapapa skier Ben Tidswell is just one behind Simon Wi Rutene in the list of the country's top skiers after a successful 1990 ski season. The two-metre (6ft 6inches) tall racer started the season in fourth listing and six seconds behind Wi Rutene in the Blue Stratos Slalom. By the end of the year he was less than a second in arrears at the Mitsubishi Motors 1990 Ski Nationals. His improvement has been put down to intensive skiing and training under coach Robert Zallman who "has been able to fine tune the lanky skier's technique and has also given him the confidence to go for it" according to the Mitsubishi Motors Ski Report.
