Fishing survey under way

The trout harvest survey being carried out on Lake Taupo and the Tongariro River by the Department of Conservation is now underway and progressing well. During the four survey days in July, a high percentage of all anglers on the lake and river were interviewed by DOC staff. Large numbers of anglers were observed during aerial surveys on the Tongariro River; on some weekday morning flights, more than 120 were counted along the river banks. The most

popular fishing pools were the Jones, Hydro, Breakaway and Boulder pools. Angler numbers in these pools reached double figures on several occasions. Fewer anglers were observed using the lake, although some large concentrations of boats were seen, particularly at the Tongariro delta and Rangatira Point. Anglers who made sure that their rods were visible when they saw the survey plane made aerial counting much easier; this gesture was greatly appreciated by the DOQ observers.
