Whakapapa snowmaking studies continue

Whakapapa's snowmaking studies will continue this year for the Happy Valley learners area. Last year a snowmaking gun was trialled at the field and this year. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts has installed a computerized weather station to analyse humidity and temperatures to see if conditions will suit commercial snowmaking. Low humidity and temperatures are needed. RAL has found the results so far to be positive. RAL next needs a water right from the regional water board plus cheap power, which the King Country Electric Power Board has offered, at about four cents per unit, close to the cheap night rate. Enough snowmaking to cover the two beginner's fields at Whakapapa needs the equivalent of an hour's electricity in 1000 homes.
