DOC DISLIKES "RANGER"
The Department of Conservation is to continue to leave out the term "ranger" from its vocabulary despite public identification with it. Recently the department considered calling field centre managers "chief rangers", but the idea was not sufficiently supported. After the department came into being in 1987 rangers became "conservation officers".
