Workman first Ruapehu mayor
Garrick Workman said he was surprised, and pleased, to win the Ruapehu District mayoralty race in Saturday's election.
He beat Taumarunui's Terry Podmore by 396 votes in the contest which he says he always felt would be close. He said yesterday the reality was sinking in
and the hard work is about to start. His first plan is to get together all the councillors in a "shirt-sleeves-rolled-up" meeting where they can get to know each other and decide where to go

From page 1 operating a united team. Mr Workman said he was thrilled at the support from Waimarino people, with 1111 voting for him as councillor. Having been elected mayor, the three Waimarino councillors become Ellen Gould, Bill Peach and Doug Bennett. Taumarunui Borough Mayor Terry Podmore said he believed the election became a threeway contest between himself, Joe Murphy and Garrick Workman. He said he first thought it would go his way because Taumarunui had the population advantage, but that Murphy, also from the north, had split the vote with 1095 votes.
