Scouts battle weather on bikes

Twelve Waimarino scouts battled against shocking weekend weather conditions on their bicycles to ride around the mountains to raise money for their Jamboree trip next year. The boys met early on Saturday to arrange another date for the sponsored ride but voted against their leader's postponement decision and decided to get stuck in and have a go at the ride. They set of riding the relay in threes, finally Teaching the Rangipo turn-off after five and a half hours, soaking wet

and having to agree with Scout Leader Grant Hays to put their bikes in the truck for a ride to National Park. From there six rode to the Makatote Viaduct and the other six rode from the viaduct back to Ohakune. They raised between $65 and $85 each for their Jamboree expenses, having riden 20 miles each. The boys were Warwick Hays, Michael and David Hammond, Carl and Daryn Trigel, Malcolm Chan, Daniel Murdie, Warwick Allen, Roger McLean, Nicholas Robb, Dean Smith and Hossah.
