$20,000 to play with

Who should dish out $20,000 of Hillary Commission sports and recreation funds for the 1989/90 year was a decision for the Ruapehu Transition Committee last Friday. Options were to hand the funds for the district to the present separate authorities, or to set up a structure for allocating the funds that would remain after the amalgamation. Taumarunui Mayor Terry Podmore successfuly put a motion for the transition committee to assume responsibility for administering the sports and recreation scheme and for the general manager to rcport to the next meeting on the method of distribution.

A complicating faetor for the new council is the inclusion of Waiouru, which is currently part of Rangitikei. If the funds were to be handed to the separate authorities Rangitikei would be the one to cover Waiouru, but only until November. Waimarino Mayor Garry Workman said Waimarino had pooled its commission funds in the past, but Taumarunui County Council member Ken Malcolm said this would be the last opportunity for the separate authorities to have a hand in distributing funds. Cr Doug Bennett said by November Waiouru would have a community board to distribute the funds.
