KERERU HUNTER FINED

The Ohakune man who was convicted on three charges relating to hunting kereru (native pigeons) received his sentence last week. On the charge of hunting absolutely protected wildlife he was fined $1000 plus $50 each for the four birds found in his possession. He was ordered to pay $400 costs. In sentencing Whetu Marama Mark Mareikura Judge Unwin said the court wanted to deter him and any others from hunting kereru. He said it had been "something of a test case" and that he did not doubt the defendant's sincerity in the matter. Mareikura had claimed he was exercising his and his Marae's traditional hunting rights. The judge suggested the defendant's marae could accept responsibility for the fine.
