New trail markers prove worth

The new trail markings and safety signs are proving very effective this year at Whakapapa, says RAL. Over the summer, Ski Patrol, operations and marketing personnel met to design an effective and accurate system to mark trails and increase skier awareness of natural hazards on the skifield. An American, James Niehues was commissioned to produce an airbrushed picture of the mountain exaggerating the main contours. The main ski trails were then marked on the picture using the international colour codes to identify the ability level of the skiing offered on each trail. Trail signs were then produced to accurately depict the trails on the map on the mountain itself. The result has been very well received by skiers, says RAL. Even people who are unfamiliar with the mountain can find their way around with ease. They can read the trail map at the top of a run and then see the trail marking signs stuck in the snow to indicate the way down. The new trail map is available at the ticket office at the Top O' the Bruce.
