RAETIHI BRIGADE SELL SMOKE DETECTORS

Following the Auckland rest home fire tragedy the Raetihi Fire Brigade remind Waimarino residents that the brigade can supply smoke detectors. Volunteer Fireman Neil McLean said the brigade has been providing the smoke detectors for the past six months and is continuing to do so. They cost $30 - a small amount for a device which could save your life, says Mr McLean. He said the fire service is suggesting every home in New Zealand should have at least one detector, and that it should be installed correctly. If one is installed it should ideally be at the start of the passage between the kitchen and the bedrooms, but not inside the kitchen as cooking smoke and can easily set them off there. If a second one is fitted it should, in most houses, be in the lounge. "The idea is to warn people sleeping of smoke or fire before it gets to them," said Mr McLean.
