NZ CATTLE DRIVE MAY PASS THIS WAY

A "Great New Zealand Cattle Drive" is being planned for Autumn next year, starting in Gore and ending in Hamilton. At this stage the organisers of the "Trekathon 1990" - "a New Zealand sesquicentennial cattle droving event endorsed by the New Zealand 1990 Commission are seeking permission and or support from the numerous local bodies, the Department of Conservation, the Ministry of Transport, local Maori tribes, the National Roads Board and farming and community organisations. They will soon be approaching people in this area as the proposed route travels through Waiouru, Ohakune, possibly Raetihi, through National Park and up to Taumarunui, using "stock routes running parallel with the main road" where possible. Funds raised from the event are planned to go to a New Zealand disaster relief appeal to mobilise assistance in emergencies such as Cyclone Bola.
