ADELAIDE, Feb, 4* Australia -gained atf first innings lead oVer England in another day of terrific heat at Adelaide' to-day. Miller was the hero of the Australian batting with a startling display before lunch while the hurning sun made conditions very trying. He scored 50 in the first 40 minutes of play. The Victoi*ian opened the day sensationally by hitting the first ball from Wright — a no-ball — into the members' stand for six. Flaying the bowling, he played the star role in the fifth wieket partnership for 150 with Johnson. Miller took 151 minutes forihis century, his first in Test cricket. In doing so, he showed every shot in the hook. His late cutting was powerful and well timed, while his driving- was terrific. Johnson took 115 minutes3 to reach 50 in a fine stand. Tallon and McCool went quickly, but Lindwall and Dooland helped the iscore alpng. Dooland and Miller put, on 63 for. the ninth wieket in 58 minutes. The Australian innings closed within two minutes of the tea intervaj, giving Australia a lead of 27 runa on the first innings. Hutton Opens Brightly Ilutton opened brightly -when England began its second innings. He scored two fours in the first over from Miller, to give him 12 in eight minutes. A thunderstorm was breaking as the innings began. Rain stoppea play and play was held up for 24 minutes. Hutton scored ihe first 20 runs on the board, and then Washbrock took a hand. He lifted Lindwall over the square-leg fence in scoring 20, while Hutton was a.lding two. Hutton took 57 minutes to reach 50, hitting seven fours, and in 82 minutes' batting before stumps, England scored 96 without loss.
