LONDON, February 4. & Accordirfg to a statement posted in the works, it is going to cost the Austin Motor Company £1100 an hour to maintain payments to vorkers under the guaranteed 3 ! -hour week arrangement during the stoppage which begins after the night shift to-night as a result of the coal shortage, The company stated that it did not know how long' the factory would remain closed. The Minister of Supply, Mr. Wilmot, had informed the company that the coal allocation co-uld not be increased, ana the present allocation permitted wor'king* for only one dav a fortnight.
The heavy payments involved in the guaranteed week could not eontinue for more than one or at the most two weeks. The vice-chair'man of iNuffields, Sir Miles Thoinas, said the Nuffiel'd organisation was, working only three days this week, but would not completely close down. The Evening- News says that about ■140 West Riding industrial firms, mostly in thq textile trade and employing' about 30,000, are also working* only three or fourways.
