THREE FIRES IN TOWN AREA YESTERDAY
Two fire calls were answered and three fires extinguished by the Rotorua Fire Brigade yesterday. The first call, at 12.44 p.m. was to a scrub fire at the Ranolf Street end of the railway reserve. Although no damage was done and the blaze was extinguished with first aid equipment, the goods shed near the turntable was, for a period, threatened. Less than an hour later the siren again sounded and the engine this time proceeded to Tarewa Road where some scrub on the railway enibankment had caught fire as the result of a spark from a passing locomotive. This blaze was also dealt with summarily by the brigade. As they were returning to the station, firemen noticed smoke from another portion of the railway embankment a mile further up the line. There was no direct access to the spot and the engine had to take a considerable detour before it reached the blaze, which was extinguished with delivery from a hose.
