TRIBUTE PAID TO MAORI RACE

( Press Assn.- —

MR. NASH'S BROADCAST \ CONTRIBUTION TO DOMINION'S PROGRESS

Rec. 11.30 p.m.)

iCANBERRA, Jan. 31. ''The Maori was equal to, but no better nor worse than people from any other part of the world, and had gifts which were made available to us and enabled us to be better than if we had not known them," said the Minister of Finance, Mr. Walter Nash, in an address broadcast to-night over the National network. Mr. Na$. said that New Zealand's interest in the South Seas Conference was linked up with its interests in the Polynesians and Maoris. Anyone who had studied the relationship between two different types of people and two races generally would be struck with the enthusiasm for what had been done and by what the Maoris had done in the last century. "We realise the Maori has a magnificent tradition and that he has made great contributions to the advancement of our country," said Mr. Nash. "It is because of what New Zealand has done for the MaoriS and the Maoris for New Zealand, that New Zealanders are particularly interested in this conference."
