AIRLINER CREW HAVE NARROW ESCAPE
SYDNEY, January 31. The crew of a Lancastrian airliner, which crashed when landing* at Mascot aerodrome, Sydnev, to-day, escaped with a shaking but the machine was badly damaged. Prompt action by airfield firefiien in spraying* the petrol-soaked wreckage with foam prevented it bursting into flames. The plane carried no passengers and it was returning from a test flight before leaving for London tonight. Just as the plane levelled off before touching down, a gust of wind seemed to raise a wing. The plane then swung, and, after skidding , along the* runway for several hundred -yards in an erratic manner, smashed its undercarriage. The forepart of the fuselage was crumpled and one engine wrenched from its bed. |
