Nurses Reject Closed Shop Idea
Following Willesden (London) Council's "closed shop" action, nurses ernployed hy Walthamstow Council have reeeived in their pay envelopes notices that they must join a recognised trade union or organisation. Ten nurses vvho did not receive dismissal notices with the rest of the staffs at the two Willesden hospitals tendered their resignations, to take effect.if the notices are not withdrawn. The matron of oue hospital said tath this meant that the whole of her stalf was standing "100 per cent. against tyranny, and. for the Royal College of Nursing." Dr. Guy Dain, chairman of the Bi*itish Medical Associatipn, stated: "We are strongly opposed to the closed shop principle and we shall stand behind and support any memhers of the B.M.A. who are given notiee by local authorities." Alderman Clark, chairman of the Wilesden Council General Purposes Committee, said he expected notices woukl be withdrawn.
