HAZARDS OF RADIO ACTIVITY
U.S. Navy Will Scrap All Bikini Test Ships WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. The hazards dne to the continuing radic-activity oln the Bikini Atoll atom homb test ships are so great that it wiJ.l pvobably be unsafe to sell them even fc-r scrap metal. If i\ warship eomes withing range of an tom homb, its days of usefulness are over, even though structurally it is virtually undamaged. A United States Navy spolcesman said that this was the "logical conclusion? on the tests on the Bikini target ships. Radio-activity persisted to such a dangerous degree that when their value for study had ended, the entire Bikini fleet' would be eitner scuttled or used for target practice. It is said that no matter how low the radio-activity might become, the uncontrolled d'isposition of the ships in the scrap market might expose the government to huge damage suits by workmen who might contraet radiological poisoning. It is proposed to transfer some of the target ships to Pearl Harhour for further examination.
