MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.

To the Editor. iSir, — I was interested' to read the correspondent in connection with the Government Gardens. Having been at Tauranga recently for a day or two, I could not help but compare that town i with Rotorua, unfavourably I am j afraid to the latter. j I was chiefly impressed by the com- | parative freedom from dust, which is ' no doubt aecounted for by the sealed roads. It seemed to me that every street in the borough was sealed. Further, the grass verges were a pleasui*e to the eye. j Our antiquated Post Office with its cramped quarters is a disgraceful affair compared to Tauranga's modern structure. We in Rotorua would be i most fortunate to have even Taui ranga's old Post Office, let alone their present modern one. The ol'd Post i Office is a handsome building now used i as Government offices. ! I had occasion to do some business I at the Bank of New Zealand there. ! There, again, the bank is a handsome, j modern structure. Those of us who : have business dealings at our local I Bank of New Zealand wonder bow the ; crowded staff tolerate the conditions ; under which they are eompelled to | work. I feel sure that the Inspector j of Factories would not tolerate those I conditions in a privately owned facj tory, and it is a wonder to me that j the Health Department does not conj demn it. The outside of the bank is | an architectural monstrosity and the inside is a rabbit warren — not exactly a credit to a Sfcate-owned institution, nor to Rotorua. I derived most pleasure from Taurangi brightly-lit streets and neon : signs, a welcome change from dismal j Rotorua. i Surely something can be done by | the council to prevent Rotorua slipi ping back the way it is. — I am, etc., A RE'SIDENT. i
