BRITAIN'S DISGRACE.
C. B.
F. PARKINSON.
To the Editor. Sir, — Known for years as "Britain's Disgrace," the traffic in decrepit horses to Antwerp for slaughter bids fair to have its counterpaivt now in this country in the sale of horses for slaughter for U.N.R.R.A. Already this nefarious trade is well into its stride, as buyers are hard at work all over the country," buying up horses that through lameness and other in- | formities are useless for further work. Into its stride also, however, is the. ! local branch of the S.P.C.A. and from j the first mob of these unforunate anij mals, one hopelessly foundered horse | was stopped on its painful journey and | diverted to the local hunt lcennels for | immediate slaughter, whilst within a I few hours of the incident the society's ! emergency committee had met and ! the S.P.C.A. Federation secretary was ! communicated with in Wellington with j a request to set immediate machinery j in action, throughout the whole coun- ' try, putting all inspectors on the alert j to stop the driving of lame hoi'ses j on the roads and to take appropriate . action. i The co-operation of the puhlic is : earnestly desined and can be .best I used by immediately reporting by tele- ; phone any such horses travelling the I .roads, the following phone numbers: j hon. sec., 730; president, 293; or.vice- ! president, 64 will ensure irnmediate action being taken by the society. — I : am, etc., *
