Attitude of Union Is Explained By President
AUCKLAND, Saturday. Principles were established between Cabinet and representatives of the National Council of the New Zealand Watersicle Workers' LTnion as the basis of the settlement of the dispute and the resumption of overtime work on Monday. This was disclosed to-day when a resolution passed by the watersiders' national council at its final meeting yesterday was revealed by the presiden of the waterside union, Mr. H. Barnes. He asserted that the Prime Minister's letter sent to the union yesterday restating the views of the Government had little effeet on the se.tlement. After returning to Auckland this morning, Mr. Barnes said: "In view of the letter which the Prime Minister has seen fit to publish, it is necessary to state two points. The first that he National Council of the Waterside Workers' Union endorsed the policy pursued by the National Council recommending the men to resume work was that the Prime Minister's letter lie on the table, but we recommended our members to resume overtime work from Monday, January 20, on the basis of the principles established during the discussions between the national council of the union and Cabinet. * This should demonstrate how little effect the Prime Minister s letter had on the settlement of the dispute," Mr. Barnes said.
