New Post For Sir Miles Dempsey (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) LONDON, Deeember 28. General Sir Miles Dempsey, Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, is to oecome chairman of the Government Racecourse Betting Control Board, and is to retire from the army at his own reqr/jst. He will be succeded In the Middle East command by Lieutenant-General Sir John Crocker, G.O.C., Southern Command. General Lempsey eommanded the 13th Corps in the Sicilian campaign and during' the earlier days of the fighting on the Italian mainland. In January, 1944, he was appointed to the command oi the British Second Army, then being constituted for the invasion of Normandy, and he continued in command of that army until Germany's surrendel*. !He took over the command of the 14th Army in the Far East from General Slim. General Dempsey will bring pcrsonal experience of racing* to his new appointment as he is a well lcnown rider and owns his own st-"d and racing staole. The appointment earries a salary of £6'000 a year. At 4B he was believed to be the most obvious s-uccessor to Field-Marshal Montgomery as Chief oi' the Imperial General Staff.
