Hair-Raising Experience In Lyttelton Tunnel
CIIRISTUHURCH, last night. The son of the third Earl of Balfour, known to his shipmates on the Pamir as Ordinary Seaman Balfour, figured in a sensational incident in the Lyttelton. tunnel with Able-Seaman C. Jessup. The two sailors had -been visiting friends at Mt. Pleasant. Before they left, their hostess gave them each a large buneh of flowers for their quarters. When they arrived at Heathcote they found the last train to port had gone, so decided to walk through the tunnel. Progress was slow without a light, but this was supplied in a few minutes by the headlight of a locomotive drawing a train through the tunnel. After hasty consuiltation th'e men decided to lie down against Ihe wall, which they didi. There was little room between the \\ all and the train and as it passed the suction raised their hair on end. However, they escaped injury, and continued their walk still e-lutching their -bouquets. The Pamir will sail forxSydney this afternoon.
