-By Telegrr.ph— Copyrlght).
Waihi, Friday. A ten-year-old boy, Ross W. Caradus, the cort of ''Ma C. Caradus, the director of the Waihi Technical . School, lost his life through, ^fiffpcation at Waihi Beach yesterday by the eollapse of;.a tunnel which he and a | youngqy brother had burrowed out in the sandhills, near where a ' stream flbws out to the sea. The body was not discovered until 3.30 in the afternoon. , * It appeai's that Donald, the younger boy, left his. brother in the tunnel about 12 o'clock, and though Ross did not arrive in.trme for lunch ,jio immediate fears were entertained for his safety owing to the fact that he was generally late home. A search was subsequently made by his mother, ! the younger boy showing the locality [ of the tunnel. | The body, which was extricated by ! Mr. A. H. Clark, was found lying in j the tunnel about five feet from 'the I entrance. It was completely covered, , with the head p.ointing outwards. Owing to the positibn of the body it is . thought that the unfortunate lad was i sheltering from a heavy shower of • rain when the accident occurred. It is estimated that over a ton of sand I came away when the tunnel collapsed. ! Doctors Bridgman and Lawrence j were quickly on the scene of the fat- > i ality, but the boy had then been dead for some hours. At the inauest this morning the coroner, Mr. W. M. Wallnut, returned a verdict of accidental death.
