Christchurch, Dec. 23 When the Drainage Board inspecto" visited a house in Oxford Terrace yesterday to ascertain if certain repairs that had been ordered; had been carried out, his reeeption was not of the best, and he left shortly after minus a tooth and with several others damaged. The person who caused the damage wns Geoi'ge Ingram Williams; aged 43, and when chax'ged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with assauiting the inspector, Frederick Plant Frye, he pleaded guiltju Sub-Inspector G. B. Edwards said that when the inspector went to the house he was told by accused to get out. The inspector explained that he was only carrying out his ddty, hut accused told him that if he did not go off the property he would put him out. With that, accused struck, Mr. Frye a blow on the mouth and followed it up with a second one, breaking the inspector's upper dental plate, knocking out one of his lower teeth and loosening four others. The repairs. would eost £6 or £7. Mr. F. W. Johnston said accused was suffering from war disabilities. Ho had been in and out of hospital for some time, and was a bundle of nerves. , The Magistrate (Mr. E. D. Mosley) said that had it not been for what Mr. Johnston had said, he would have considered sending accused to gaol. Hn was not going to have inspectqrs assaulted by men like accused. Williams would be fined 20s, in default seven days' imprisbnment, with hard labour.
