Auckland, Wednesday A narrow escape from drdwning. was experienced by five members of the crew of the Auckland yacht Little Jirn, which was driven ashore andtotally wreeked at Catherine Bay, Great Barrier Island after being .dismasted in a gale on Christmas Day. Tho crew compxused the owner, E. J. Mitchelson, S. J. Jervis, ,H. New--comb, G. Allison and G. L. Haslett. All are in their early twenties: The Little Jim leffc Poi*t Fitzroy, Great Barrier, shortly after 8 o'clock on Christmas morning for. the Little Barrier. On account of the sti-ong south-westexdy gale and heavy seas. it ' was decided to turn back. Shbrtly aftei* the mast broke, and the dinghy fouled the wreckage of tbe mast and was lost. A jury sail was rigged and a course set to Cathexune Bay abbut six miles away. An attempt was made to reach the sheltered side of the bay . and when this pro'ved impossible tyro anchox-s were dropped in an exposed pcsition at about 2 p.m. These Hold for about four hours and whfen oxie gave ' way the other compiehced to drag. It was then seen that nbthing could be done to save the boat ahd the cx*ew were forced to swim to. land * 100 yards away. The yacht went ashore on the rocks shortly afterwards and the pounding of the seks'soon reduced her to a total wreck. The five men made a tent from a sail afid csmped for the night. * •
