MYSTERIOUS CYLINDER BROUGHT BACK TO AUCKLAND EXTRAORDINARY PRECAUTIONS

— By Telegraph — Copyright) .

Auckland, Tuesday A gas cylinder which was shipped from Wellington to Sydney by the Marama on the last trip was returned to New Zealand in the strong-room of the vessel to-day. On arrival at Sydney it was uneovered near the bottom of the hold. The Customs officials took charge of it, encased it in a network of string, soaled it in several places, and put it in the strong-room. To-day, when the strong-room was opened, there were present the captain, second officer, purser, a member of the head office of the Customs Department, and other customs officers and postal officials. The seals on the cylinder were examined, ^Ehen red tape was bound round it. The New Zealand seals were added, and placed in another mailbag, which was also sealed by the Customs Office. The package was then sent on a postal truck to the railway station for despatch to Wellington. Not until it reaches Wellington will its contents be known. The opinion expressed to-day is that the cylinder was too light to contain silver, and it is possible it contains nothing.
