NYASALAND RUNNER
COVERS 70 MILES IN A DAY TO CAREY LETTER. A native feat of travelling 70 miles on foot within a day is vouehed for by Mr. L. S. Norman, of Luchenza, Nyasaland, who writes: "I had occasion, very early one morning, to send a letter to Blantyre, distant 40 miles by road. I desired this letter to reach Mi\ J. Scott, solicitor, before he closed his office in the afternoon. "The need of haste was explained to the messenger, who was selected, not for any known trekking powers, but because he happened to be handy. A good present and a free short holiday was promised for quick performance. ^'The results exceeded expectations. Not only did the man catch' Mr. Scott, but, to my amazement, arrived back at my house the following morning at daybreak wtih the reply. This was when the aids of push-cycles and xnotor-lorries were unobtainable. "The messenger, by making use of short cuts, rnay have reduced the distance to 70 miles or thereabouts." It is recalled that Anthony Lovas, a Hungarian marathon runner, last year ran from Vienna to Gyor, about 94 miles, ixi 15- hours.
