CLIPPINGS FROM "THE CHRONICLE." July 31, 1897. — Mr. W-. Bright, who i 'has been for some time camped on his leasshold on the other side of the eHmo Gorge, whil© coxning into town on Sunday last, observed that the walter-race -had heen damaged by a large stone falling from- the bank, and that the water was overflowing an great volumes. He brought the inf ormation to town, and the clerk of works .and Mr. Pureell at once went ,out and repaired the damage. A short time lago Mr. Bright dragged a dead horse out of the creek from which the town derives its water-sup-ply. A periodioal inspeotion ought ,to be made of the creek above the water-race; and, according to certain reports in circulation, the sooner the first takes place the better. July 31, 1897. — jThe Rev. Dr. Clifford and party who arrived here on Friday, left by coach on Wednesaay morniixg for Taupo and Napier. Saturday and Sunday were spient at the Te Ngae with the Rev. Mr. Brown, who is an old friend of the Docftor. On M'ondiay they visited Waiotapu and . were favoured with a charming day. Tuesday was devoted to the exploring of the many wonders at Ohinemutu and Whakarewarewa. They seemed to be greatly delighted with what they saw. They were especially pleased with' the scenes at Whakarewarewa, the gt sysers, the diving- by the- children, and the cooking of potatoes in the hot springs, as well as the hakas, etc. Dr. Clifford is now i regarded as the foremost xnian in the Baptist Chxirch' and is especially noted for the advanced position he takes on •thie questiors of the day, particularly that of education.
