u.s.a. cruiser rams british oil tanicer

San Francisco, Oct. 24. The cruiser Chicago rammed the British tanker Silver Palm, cutting a hole over fifteen feet deep in the tanlcer's prow. The ships collided in a morning fog. The cruiser was damaged, but proceeded under hcr own power to port. The British boat needed no assistanee. She was en route to the harbour. The chief pay clerk, John Troy, was killv T, Lieutenant H. A. McFarland is missing (probably pinned in the mangled section), Lieutenant F. S. Chapelle died and a machinist, John Ohlers, was seriously hurt. Lacking details, naval officials stated that the ships had apparently met when travelling at a high speed.
