(Rec. 7.15 p.m.) Washington, Oetober 18 A two-year programme for a sharp curtailment of production by corn and pig farmers was announced by the Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Wallace, to-day as a prelude to the latest and most extensive .effort to improve agricultural prices. The programme involves a potential Government expenditure of 500,000,000 dollars and aims at decreasing pig production by 25 per cent. and the corn acreage by 20 per cent. A. processing tax will be levied on pigs for a two-year period. The rate will be 50 cents per lOOlbs at the start increasing gradually until February 1 after which it will be two dollars per lOOlbs or two cents per 1b for the remainder of the period. A tax on corn used in the production of food and not fed to animals will also come into effect.
