COUNCIL ECONOMY
FURTHER LETTER FROM RATEPAYERS' ASSN. NOT TO BE REOPENED At the last meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council a letter was received from the Rotorua Ratepayers' Association expressing disappointment i at the "abortive results" of the council's recent economy measures and requesting that the matter be reopened. I The council decided to reply pointo j ing out that in spite of the fact that j a large sum in bath fees revenue had i been lost to the council and that the j advertising and fire prevention rates j had had to be increased, it had still | been possible to make a reduction of | 5 per cent. in the general rate. At last night's meeting of the ] council, a further letter was receiv- ; ed from the association stating that r its previous letter had not referred [ to rates, but to the cost of borough administration and asking that the i letter should again be referred to the council so that the matter could be dealt with. Cr. O. H. Coleman immediately moved th&t as the matter had already 'been exhaustively discussed, the association be informed that the council would not proceed further with the matter at present. Cr. G. Steele said that he understood that the association had asked for certain information which had not been supplied. The mayor read the letter and pointed out that no speeific information had been asked for. Cr. Coleman said that he had seen the letter sent by the town clerk in reply to the association, and it had not given the information set out in the council's motion. This might perhaps be supplied. Cr. Wackrow: I think we have ( wasted too much time on this already. There was no dissent from this view and Cr. Coleman-'s motion was carried.
