DISTRICT WORKS
engineer's report TABLED AT ROTORUA COUNTY COUNCIL'S MEETING YESTERDAY The following report on work undertaken during the month, was made to the Rotorua County Council by the county engineer, Mr. T. S. Robertson, at yesterday's meeting. Main highway, Tauranga Road. — Five miles of this road had been graded; 183 cubic yards rhyolite, 30 cubic yards spawls and 10 cubic yards fines have been carted. Good progress* is being made with the Rerenga filling. Main Highway, Rotorua-Pikowai Road. — The filling near the boundary has again required attention. Owing to the light nature of the material available it washes with every rain, and to get a safe width I have reduced the filling by approximately | six feet steepening the grade on either side. Main highway, Maraeroa Road. — Sixty-four cubic yards of Ngongotaha metal have been carted and spread. Ngongotaha Valley Road. — The large culvert near the reserve has been concreted and approaches completed for one way traffic. Hinton's Road. — The Waiteti tunnel is in 85 feet and the ram creek tunnel 20 feet. Earthwork is progressing satisfactorily. Atiamuri Road. — The drag has been used on this road and has considerably improved it. Te Ngae-Paengaroa Road. — The crossing at the Mourea Mill has been attended to and the gates across the road into Yaughan's sub-division are to be removed. Trucks The trucks have been carting metal the various roads as follows: — Main highway, Maraeroa Road, 64 cubic yards Ngongotaha metal; main highway Tauranga Road, 183 cubic yards rhoylite, 30 cubic yards spawls, 10 cubic yards fines; Ngongotaha Valley Road, 39 cubic yards metal; Clayton Road, 51 cubic yards pumice; Kaharoa Road, 27 cubic yards rhyolite; Dalbeth's Road, 15 cubic yards metal. I am finding it difficult to keep the maintenance of the roads up with I only two trucks and to take advantage of the relief workers. Unemployed Owing to the exceptionally heavy ,rain this month there have been a considerable number of slips and. washouts occurring and wherever pos,'sible unemployed men have been used.
