MR. FORBES NOT PREPARED TO APPROVE AMERICAN PLAN MIS-REPORTING ALLEGED

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Wellington, Saturday. A further statement was issued by the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates to-day in regard to the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes' recent cable asking him to contradict certain statements wrongly attributed to him by some sections of the American press. Mr. Coates says: "The following cable received to-day from Mr. Forbes shows how easy it is to change the whole purport of a remark by the omission of one word, in this case "if." "Mr. Forbes says: 'The statement on Mr. Roosevelt's code attributed to me is incorrect and should read as follows: I am confident that if his programme of reconstruction is successful in restoring prosperity to the United States it will have a henefit on the remainder of the civilised world.' "Mr. Forbes adds: Tt is ahsurd to suggest that I expressed any opinion regarding the eificacy or otherwise of the National Recovery Act." Even its most ardent supporters were only hopeful and by no means convinced of its success. The plan bristled with difficulties and was not yet sufficiently advanced to allow any judgment to be formed. By way of comment Mr. Coates says he ean state from his own experience in the United States that certain press statements cannot always he received in full confidence that they aie correct. Such instances of misreporting are hy no means isolated.
