MINISTER NOT FOND OF "TURNING THE CORNER" "GENERALLY IMPROVING"
-By Telegrajih — Copyright).
Christchurch, Saturday. "Upon such an occasion as this, one is expected to make some allusion to certain conditions and future prospects. I suppose some of ,yoxx aro expecting me to say that we ixave turned the corner but I am going to avoid that particular expression and confine myself to the statenxent that generally speaking, matt.ers are fmproving," said the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, in opening the Christchurch Winter Show and Exhibition on Saturday night. "I am. pleased to say thejr are improving slowly," continued the Minister, "and I sincerely hope that the improvement will be steady. We do not want any more booms in New Zeaiand and we doix't want an era of excessively high prices but there .is just enough sunshine to be seen in the working affairs of the country today to take away some of the ammunition of those who love to talk of the "glooniy ontlook" and possible disaster to come. Mr. Cobbe said that it was a mistake to suppose that the Govqrnmept was not interested in local manufac: turing industries. Although many members of the Government were farmers, most of them had some association, with business and some spent their lives at business. All of them recognised the place filled by manufacturing industries in national life. The show itself supports in a measure the Minister's optimism. It is eonsidered the best display of .xnanufactures ever assembled in Christchurch and it is certainly an instructive and interesting exhibition. AU of the available space was booked before the opening and the attendances to-day were more than lOvJO better than the figures for the opening day last year.
