ADVICE OF EXPERTS
POLICE IN VESTIGATION S IN MOUNTAINEERING TRAGEDIES Christchurch, Saturday. The pclice throughout New Zeaiand have received definite instructions from the Departnxent of Justice concerning mountaineering tragedies, The instruction states that as in most cases death while mountaineering has been due to the neglect of some recognised precaution or to want -of experience by the party on some point material to the nxishap, it is advantageous that the knowledge and experience of experts in mountaineering should be available to the police., When facts relative to any accident are ascertained by the police they. are to confer with. one or more experts wh'o will probably he able to suggest profitahle lines of inquiry. Coroners have also been. invited to consider calling an expert to give evidence at any inquiry so that his knowledge And experience may he at ,the service of future climhers. The following such experts are named in the Departmental memorandum: Dunedin, Mr. Eric Miller; Christchurch, Mr. G. E. Manneringj -Taranaki, Mr. L. O. Hooker; Auckland, Mr. W. Laird Thompson; Wellington, Mr. Arthur P. Harper. . Coroners are x'equested to give tlie police every facility in carrying out the instruction..
