ROTORUA CL.UB POINTS WON IN SECOND SERIES OF RACES SEALED HANDICAP THIS WEEK ,
(Notes by '
"The second series of road cycle races arranged by the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club during the present season was concluded on Saturday, July 22 with a 27£ mile race run under very adverse conditions. Despite the heavy rain, however, the riders maintained a good pace throughout the race. S. Howe (3min.) was the first to get away and in the first four laps he gained time on the back markers, but steadied up over the last lap to gain second place. R. Melton and A. Beckett (45sec.) rode together for three laps when Beckett retired. Left on his own, Melton set off after S. Howe, and by good riding caught him in the second to last lap. On the last lap he went away to win the race by one and a half minutes. Melton appears to be the fittest member of the club and to be improving with every race. L. Savage, off scratch, found his handicap too much for him and was losing ground on the front markers when he fell in the ninth lap. Although he remounted he retired after two more laps. Twenty-five miles seems to be his limit at the present time. The points scored for the second series were as follows: Handicap trophy, R. Melton, 16; L. Savage, 12; A. Beckett, 8; S. Howe, 6; C. Head, 4. Fastest time, R. Melton, L. Savage, 6 points. The iiext series of events will commence on Saturday next, August 5, when a 10| 'mile sealed handicap race will be held. This class of race, which is new to the members, should be very popular and will prove good racing experience for them.
