AUSTRALIAN CHARGED WITH BEING IDLE AND DISORDERLY BOGUS LEASE PREPARED On a charfe of being idle and disorderly, with insufficient visible means of support, >an Australian, Robert Burton, alias Cecil Allan Crossley, alias Croshy, alias Robert Gordon Mclntyre, aged 27 years, was convicted and ordered to eome up for sentence within six months if called upon, by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M. in the Rotorua Court yesterday morning. For the police, Senior-Sergeant E. J. Carroll said that accused had been staying with a man named Harvey at Te Ngae and when he left some dispute arose concerning maifure sacks and other articles which were missing. Accused had sold some sacks to a looal firm for 6/8. He had thengone to Reporoa, and had represented to a man named Morley, who was blind, that he was a remittance man from Perth and had suggested that Morley lease him the farm. To this end hehad drawn up an agreement hut Morley had come in to Rotorua in connection with the agreement and had his suspieions aroused which led to accused being arrested by Constable Roberts. The man had a previous list of convictions but the senior sergeant said that in view of the circumstances he would suggest that accused he given a fresh start and an opportunity to go out to the forestry camp for work. Appearing for the accused Mr. R. Potfer said that the man had been working* for Harvey for his keep and had been handling horses expecting others to come thrcugh. This, however, had not eventuated and he realised lihat that sort of life was no good to him and was prepared to go out to the forestry camp if givc-n an opportunity. Mr. Potter suggested that Burton be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. The magistrate agreed to this course and ordered accused to report to the police daily until he went into the forestry camp.
