GOLF

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES PRODUCE TWO FINE BOUNDS Owing to the ineidence of racing events the golf championship matches. which were set for to-day were arranged to be played on Friday or during the week-end. Two of the four championship matches were played' yesterday. S. E. Carr defeated T. Kelly after an almost faultless round of golf while the match was alive. His score to the 15th was 56 but fin- ,

ishing with two sixes and a three brought the round in 72 which might have easily been a club record for the course. M. D. Carr was defeated by P. A. Kusabs at the 19th. The loser was most unlucky; his round of 75 deserved a win. After being dormy one, his opponent left him a dead stymie at the 18th, which in negotiating he sank, carrying the game to the 19th, which went to Kusabs, giving him the match. A stymie at the first also cost him a hole. As stated last week P. A. Kusabs is following in his father's footsteps and making a habit of finding form when urgently needed. The day was fine after severe frost and the greens were fast and tricky. Against that there was more run on the fairways than for some time. Last Saturday's bogey handicap was won by H. Parata two down— a meritorious performance under the most excusable of conditions. Spedding, 3 down, and Marshall and G. French 4 down, -were the next best performers. Wednesday Cup The semi-final of the Wednesday cup resulted in Spedding Jnr. defeating A. Ford 3 and 1, and P. A. Kusabs defeating A. Walden by the same margin. The visitors' hook again testifies to the increasing popularity of the links. •Among the well-known short handicap performers are A. E. Toogood of Miramar and L. G. S. Rees, also of that club.
