KNITTED SOCKS
I have heard so many fond wives say, "You know I would knit hubby's socks for him if only I knew how." Well, now there will be no excuse, for here are details for knitting this longpromised and much talked about ar- ■ ticle. j Materials. — 2oz 3-ply wool. No. 13 needles. Begin at the top and cast on 48 stitches, 16 on toi each of 3 needles. Join and work in rounds of ribbing 2 plain, 2 purl for 3in. Work in plain rounds now until the leg measures 7in I from the beginning. Divide the stiti ches in halves. For the heel flap leave 12 on each instep needle, and have 24 on the heel 'needle. Knit and! purl on theseheel ' stitches for 11 inches. I To turn the heel, knit 12, knit 2 together, knit 1 turn, purl 2, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn, knit 3, knit 2 toj gether, knit 1 turn, purl 4, purl 2 toi gether, purl 1, turn, knit 5, knit 2 together, knit 1, turn( purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn. Keep on in this fashion until all stitches are knitted into one row. Pick up the stitches down either side of the heel flap, and knit into a-round again. Call the instep needle No. 1, the needle on the left No. 2, and the needle on the other side No. 3. Knit across No. 1 needle, No. 2 needle, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to end of needle. No. 3. needle, knit to 'within 3 stitches of the end of the needle, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 plain rounds. Repeat the last 3 ' rounds until there are *48' stitches on 'your needles. Knit until the foot measures 5in from the back of the heel. Shape the toe.— No. 1 needle, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to within 3' stit1'ches of the end of the needle, knit 2 j together, knit 1. No. 2 needle, knit 1, ; knit 2 together, knit to the end of needle. No. 3 needle, knit to within 3 1 stitches of the end of the needle, knit i 2 together, knit 1 2 plain rounds. ReI' peat the last 3 rounds until there are , 8 stitches on the front needle and 4 on , each of the back needles. Graft the toe- together. Finish off firmly and' press into shape.
