NOT ELIGIBLE

NO AUTHORITY TO OPERATE BEYOND ROTORUA AND TAUPO N. M. KEANE'S APflPLICATION An application for an automatic license over the Rotorua and Taupo areas and a, license for periodical trips in the Whakatane, Tauranga and Matamata counties was placed faefore the Central (Transport) Licensing Authority yesterday morndng by Mr. N. M. Keane, of Rotorua.Mr. J. D. Davys, for the applicant, said that his client was applying for an automatic license over the Rotorua and Taupo areas. He had heen in business in Rotorua for a great number of years and went mostly into the Rotorua county but "was called upon at odd times to go into the Whakatane, Tauranga and Matamata counties. The fact that he did not do regular trips to these places didl not make him eligiible for a license but it was desired that this should he granted to provide for occasions when necessary. Mr. Keane stated that his vehicles would probably make two or three trips outside the Rotorua and Taupo areas monthly. It would be no use if he was restricted1 to a visit to these places once a month, but would require two or three trips a month in order that he- could accept business offering. It would he a serious inconvenience if he had to h'and this business outside over to another contractor. Mr. Davys admitted that they had not submitted evidence of continual service to Whakatane-, Tauranga' and Matamata, but they did suhmit that an automatic license was justifiecl in the Rotorua and Taupo areas. The chairman agreed that this was so but salid that it appeared to he out of the province of the Central Authority. Mr. Davys asked for authority to enter the Whakatane, Tauranga and Matamata counties twice a month. Called hy Mr. Davys Mr. J. Sherriff said he was an employee of Mr. Keane. He stated that a number of cartage jobs outside the Rotorua area were placed with his firm at odd periods but these were not regular. A license for these places ahout twice a month would probably prove satisfactory. Mr. Davys contended that if such a firm had. to hafid over portion of their business to an opposition firm it was hardly fair to an old established business. He only asked that a license be given for this area twice a month. "The evidence satisfies th'e authority that the applicant is not entitled to a license over the counties of Matamata, Tauranga and Whakatane," ■said the chairnian, Sir Stephen; Allen. Other .parts of the application were deferred for hearing by the No. 4 Authority. •
