spanisR decree PRESIDENT ORDERS ALL CATIIOLIC SCHOOLS TO BE CLOSED DENOUNCED BY POPE

R'ec. June 4, 7.0 p.m. Madrid, June 3. After a week's delay, in which it was thought that th'e Government was hesitating, President Don Zamora, himself a devout Catholic, signed a decree regulating religious orders, and elosing Catholic sehools. ■As a. sequel, all Spanish' arehbishops have f orhidden attendance at secular sehools under penalty of ' exco.mm.unieation, and have also sent a message to- Don Zamora protesting against the grave dnjuries to the church and the diseouriesy to th'e Pope, whose attitude to Don Zamora has excited speeulation, The Pope, in an encyclical, denounced the Spanish law decreeing separation of the Ghurch and State, also th'e Religious Orders Bill yvhieh he previously declared a "masterpiece of iniquity against God." He now urges the Spanish clergy to use all means to f urther religious instruction of all th'e faithful and unite and defend the faith. Nevertheless he hints at a policy of co-operation between the Church and State.
