LOYAL DEMONSTRATION
CEREMONY IN LONDON Rec. June 4, 7.50 p.m. London, June 4. The celebration of tli'e King's sixtyeighth birthday evoked fremarkiable demonstrations of loyalty and affection at Buckingham Palace, while guns thundered the salute in St. James' Park. Th'e King was unable to wear his uniform or to ride owing to rheumatism, but watched the Prince of Wales, in his uniform as Colonel of the Welsh Guards, mounted on a bay charger, lead the cavalcade, ineluding th'e Duke of York, Duke, of Gloucester, Prince Arthur of Connaught, and many distinguished soldiers, from the palace through the cheering thxongs to the Horse Guards parade where the Prince of Wales represented His Majesty at the trooping of the colours. The Queen, Princess Royal, Duch'ess of York and Princess Elizabeth watched the picturesque ceremony. Later the Royal ladies joined His Majesty on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and watched three battalions of Guards march past, the Prince of Wales taking the salute in the courtyard. As the troops departed, an immense crowd filled the space befpre the Palace, and when Th'eir Majesties returned to the balcony, they were greeted with a storm of cheering, whieh grew in volume until it drowned the music of Guards' massed bands. Th'e King, bare-headed, smiled and waved his hand in recognition of the demonstration which lasted several minutes. The King, in a message to the Lqrd Mayor, expressed his th'anks for the birthday greetings and good wishqs, adding that he was coniident that the future would restore- the h'arrassed • world to the needed peace and prosperity.
