FINAL MEETING
COUNCIL BREAKS UP ' TALE OF HAPPY RELATIONS TOLD BY MAYOR AND COUN CILLORS THE PARTING OF THE WAYS A moving tribute to the happy relations of the Rotorua Borough Gouncil was paid by the mayor (Mr. TJackson) at the close of-the ordinary business last night in bidding farewell to the eouncillors who were not seeking re-election. The mayor thaxxked all the mem1 bers of the council for the wox-k they had done, their loyal co-operation with himself and the efficient manner in which all the committees had 'carried out the work entrusted to them. The work 'had been. doue cfixciently and in an harmonious. manner and the citizens of Rotorua "were fortunate in having the serviees of I such a body of men who had devoted. | themselves to the work of the toWn. i| It was a matter of extreme xegret that some eouncillors were .not seeking re-election. It was very hard tQ have to say good-bye to them in an official capacity. During the time they. had been in office they had formed ties and assoeiations of a personal na'ture which could not have been formed in ordinary business relatiQns. Differences had been diseussed in a fgir, broad and impartial manixer and when a. decision h'ad been ax'rived. at, it was accepted in a loyal manner. . He desired to tfeank those eouncillors who Wex-e retiring, for their serviees. Their own sufixcient reasons had made them retire, but he felt sure that they still have the interests ■ of the borough at heart. He could not have wished for better, more f.aijthful or more loyal colleagues than the present council and he sincerely hop.ed that the time would come when they could again offer their serviees. Wonderful Service As far as those eouncillors who were seeking re-election were concerned, he would say that they had given wonderful service to the borough and he hoped that on May 3, £he electors would recognise their 'worth and that they would again be members of the council. Cr. Geo. Urquhart expressed his personal appreciation of the four years he. had spent under the mayor's able leadership. He assured him that the friendship formed would ever continue and that he would follow th.e council proceedings with interest. He 'wished the three eouncillors who were standing every success on May 3. He also expressed his appreciation of the 'town clerk (Mr. "W. A. McLeaxx) and his assistant (Mr. -O'Leary) for their efficient work for the finance committee. He also eongratulated the mayor on being returned unopposed and wished him a very happy term of office. Cr. E. T. Johnston on behalf of those seeking re-election endorsed Cr. Urquhart's remarks. He also pai.d a tribute to the work of the Government nominees, Crs. Bayfeild and Wackrow. Cr. N. M. Keane, a retiring councillor spoke on similar lines as did Cr. V/. Galbraith. Cr. A. Smitb regretted the dropping out of four of the eouncillors and felt sorry that they had not been able to see another term. . . Cr. Tai Mitchell eongratulated the mayor on being returned unopposed — a deserved tribute to his work for the town. Cx*. Coleman attributed the bulk of the success and progress of the council to the inspiring leadership of the mayor. . . Cr. Bayfeild added his congratulations to the mayor and his thanks to retiring eouncillors for their serviees, and added his good wishes to those standing again. The council then had supper at the invitation of the mayor.
