PRESS COMMENT
MIXED RECEPTION Rec. April 26, 7 p.m. London, April 26. The Daily Telegraph deseribes the budget as "honest, . businesslike and sound in circumstances full of difficulties. The ehances of our winning through have been maintained by sound and scientific stewardship of national resources. The Morning Post says: "It must never be forgotten that this Government was returned to carry out a policy of Conservative finance, national economy and a sound balance sheet, and could not depart therefrom without danger of shipwreck." The News-Ghronicle states that the most discouraging fact is that the statement contains no hint of any policy whereby the downward course of trade may be checked' and employment increased. The Daily Mail comments: "It is , sound but severe." 1 The Daily Herald holds that tariffs have failed and economy measures have failed. The Government has nothing else to produce apart from small adjustments *of ' taxation and suppression of sinking fund. The bud- ' get is a crime of omissioxx. Mr. Lloyd George was absent, but Viscount -Snowden was present at the reading of the budget.
