DEARER SPIRITS
GISBORNE HOTELKEEPERS INCREASE NIP PRICES. j CANNOT FACE LOSS. Retail prices of spirits in Gisborne are to be increased as, from Monday (yesterday)), aecording] to a decision reached at a meeting of hotel proprietors held recently. The effect of increased taxation, and the dncrease in exch'ange, on the wholesalq prices of spirits was referred to by a number of speakers, and it was declared that it was impossihle to carry the additional burden without the lassist•ance of the public. By the unanimous decision j)f the meeting, it was agreed to add 6d per bottle to the price of all spirits, and to adopt the ninepenny nip as. the standard of saies over the bars. The ninepenny nip has been adop.ted in practically all New Zealand centres, and Gi'shorne is one of the last to depart from the former price of 6d. As a compensation to consumers, for the increase in the nip price, measures will be increased considerably, so that the hotel proprietors will share the burden. No alteration is to he' made in the retail prices of beer, stout or wines.
