MUST BE SOLVENT

REDUCTION IN SERVICES Wellington, "Wednesday Referring to-day to his reference at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night to. the necessity for further economies, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forhes said it was obvious that owing to the marked fall in- the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place in the price of butter, it would be necessary during the eoming financial year to put into opefation further economy measures. "It is essential," said Mr. Forbes, "that the country remain solvent, and the only way . to achieve that is to reduce expenditure in keeping with the. reduction of revenue." Asked if he could indicate what form the economies would take,.Mr. Forhes said it is too early yet to give details, but there is no doubt that there will have to he a cutting down of department.al expenditure, which would naturally involve a reduction in departmental services.
