Rec. April 2, 5.5 p.m. Calcutta, April 1. There were wild scenes on the Maidan, the open space in the centre of Calcutta, where an attempt was made to hold the hanned annual meeting of the Indian National Congress. Hundreds of Nationalists sym.pathisers gathered, but every attempt by speakers to move a resolution was stopped'. The police finally dispersed the meeting. Hundreds were arrested. The police used hatons freely and there were many broken heads.
